lever action rifles

I am looking at buying a good lever Action Rifle...want a collector item..but will use it.....

I dont want to pay more than 2 grand....does anyone have any good leads....everyone thinks their junk is worth more than everyone elses...
this site has some nice guns but most probally over priced...
http://www.armchairgunshow.com/otsRW...ester_1873.htm

Henry style....what brands are the most reliable and best for the money?..i am thinking of buying an "antique" winchester or similar ..but would it be any good for defense and accuracy and what about the new higher loads? ,cimarron?Tayors?,Uberti,Navy Arms?,Shiloh Sharp?

I'm also looking for a good auti 308 and a good 22...

Re: lever action rifles

i have got and enjoy shooting this one like it because it uses the 45 colt
the same one for my revolver.

dare i say that it is a good self defense gun with a 10 shot magazine
and the ability to reload from the side without removing an empty magazine
and without having to be empty.

Re: lever action rifles

I would not buy a collectible old lever action as a shooter because frankly the metal is not all that good and the parts are going to be expensive to replace when, not if, you break something. You will be restricted to lower performance loads as the old guns cannot withstand high pressure loads.

I would just buy a modern Marlin and leave it at that. I own several Marlin lever actions, including two 39As, an 1894, an 1897T, and a 336. The total cost for all of the guns was under $2000, and I have calibers spanning the range from .22 LR to .35 Remington which cover the range of small game to large deer.

In 1885s, I like the modern Browning replicas. I have one in .243 Win. that my wife bought me for Xmas a few years back. Great gun.

Re: lever action rifles

+1...Marlin of your choice.

What purpose .308 auto were you looking for...hunting, fighting, collecting?

And I assume 22 LR ? Bolt action, autoloading, pump?

Lots of good ones ranging from higher-end Kimbers, CZ 452 to some of the lower-end Ruger 10-22, Marlin, Remington, etc.

Re: lever action rifles

Marlin 336 hands down, the finest Lever Action money can buy. I have three, .22, .44 mag and 30-30. All three are fine rifles and I have a Sauer and Sons Colt SAA clone in .44 mag to go with the .44 rifle. None of them cost me more than $225, but I buy used. Winchesters are junk, you pay for the name only. Stay away from the collectables too, once again you overpay because of cosmetics.

Re: lever action rifles

Go with the Marlin. I have an older Winchester 30-30 lever action. I don't know how old (my dad inherited it from a friend and eventually gave it to me), but I'd guess early 1970s. There's nothing wrong with the rifle, but the recoil is much greater than it is with my friend's Marlin 30-30. Only time I ever got whacked in the face with a scope was with that Winchester. I was used to my friend's Marlin, and the Winchester's much harder kick caught me by surprise.

I've got a Winchester 94 in 30-30. It has the short 16" barrel and the big loop lever and the saddle ring. It's very fun to shoot and can be shot pretty quickly with the big lever.

Pm me if you're interested in it. I'm hunting with it next week but would sell it after that to get money for another project.

seriously just do it. Then go to http://survivalpreps.blogspot.com/20...parts-kit.html
Great spare parts list:emotions16:
Marlins are just plain overbuilt (like some rugers) brick sh*t-houses. They can handle many more high pressure calibers then Winchester ever could.

Anywhere from 4 to 10 would be a pallpark guess.

The ones that fire pistol rounds .38 .357 .44 .45 hold more that ones that fire rifle rounds.

But why shoot a pistol round from a long gun? Just because you own a pistol that shoots the same round?

You do gain velocity firing a pistol round from a longer barrel (16-20"). That will give higher kinetic energy downrange. I'm a big fan of lever rifles in handgun calibers, got my eye on a Marlin .357 mag/.38 Spl. lever gun, after a couple of higher priority buys are made.

If you reload...it makes life simpler....it is nice to have a rifle that uses the same round as your sidearm.

Rifle barrel length increased pistol cartridge energy by about 50% due to longer time to burn powder and build velocity.

A .357 Mag or .44 Mag Rifle is a fantastic deer weapon.

In general, I like lever actions for a shtf gun....they can be short and handy - powerful enough to get the job done...allows you to carry just one ammo and match toyr sidearm....

That's one reason. I also like having the option of a medium range rifle capable of firing special rounds like hollow points and hydras. Especially if going against unarmoured looters, criminals, etc.

Exactly. The gun that won the West is a proven, time test gun that isn't going away anytime soon.

I've never shot a pump action rifle. I imagine follow-up shots are a lot easier with a pump, than a lever gun? The site gives the mag capacity as 14 rounds, is that 14 in .357 mag or in .38 Special?

Re: lever action rifles

I stand corrected. Convenience and wild west nostalgia should continue to support the sales of rifles that fire pistol ammo. I once held a Marlin .38 / .357 lever action with the shorter barrel, I could not believe how little it weighed. I did not get a chance to shoot it. But for as cheap as .38 ammo is, and it's value as a target gun or short range deer rifle, it will likely be around longer than us.
